YouTube Trends Explainer: Coming Out on YouTube Rewritten (coming soon)

A month ago, brothers Austin and Aaron Rhodes released one of the top trending videos since June 2012: “Twins Come Out to Dad,” a video. It's inspired many other young people who are coming out via similar YouTube videos which have followed suit. Since then the video has become the most viewed coming out video on YouTube with over 4 million views in the first 24 hours, and 17 million views total, inspiring Ellen Degeneres to invite the family onto her show shortly after.

While the twins’ video wasn’t the first to gain widespread attention, it was an important milestone in YouTube’s growing function as aplatform for promotion, outreach, and community building for LGBT citizens.

Coming out is essentially YouTube's bread and butter. A staggering 36,000+ videos are on the platform related to coming out, which have received more than 280m views. Last year alone we saw 9,500 vlogging posts related specifically to coming out – a 20% increase from the year previous.

Trans creator Davey Wavey has accumulated 221mm views and made videos like, " I'm Transgender and I use Makeup " where he discussed his coming out story to educate people about being transgender. Transgender creator Gigi Gorgeous has a channel with 142m views where she posts videos on her personal channel as well as collaborating with brands and media companies. Her channel is titled,

YouTube's homegrown personalities have powerful platforms; when they choose to advocate for LGBTQ communities, more people listen. When dissident Olympian Tom Daley came out on YouTube in 2013, rather than a televised interview or press release, his message went straight to his fans' hearts (and went viral in the process)! Having control over your voice and using it is empowering, so thank you these brave men and women for sharing theirs with us!

As YouTube celebrity, Connor Franta points out in his comingout video, "The reason I accepted this information was because of the internet. [...] As someone who has struggled with my own sexuality in the past and came to terms with it thanks to inspiration from other people’s videos, it is important to me that I create a positive example for young LGBT youth."
